o many, there is only one "North Shore" - on Oahu, and justly famous it is,
as one of the world's best surf locations. And, for Oahu, with its high-rise Honolulu and shopaholic Waikiki, it's as close to "Old Hawaii" as you're likely to get.
But, Maui has a North Shore, too. And it differs from the developed West Maui and South Maui resort areas in much the same way as that other North Shore is different on that other island.
The North Shore of Maui is laid-back and rural, the landscape dominated by sugar plantation; the coastline, a nearly unbroken string of white sand beaches, running northeast from Kanaha Beach Park near Kahului Airport to Ho'okipa Beach Park, a few miles past Paia.
The North Shore is where the Road to Hana begins, and the bike rides down Haleakala end. A curious mix of luxo-homes, cane fires, and country stores, sprinkled with hippies and surfers.
